Metro Council Recognizes 40 Years of Room In The Inn

WHEREAS, Room In The Inn is celebrating its 40th winter season of providing shelter and support to individuals experiencing homelessness in Nashville;

and WHEREAS, the organization traces its beginnings to the winter of 1985, when Father Charles Strobel opened the doors of his congregation to offer refuge to those sleeping outside in the cold;

and WHEREAS, over the past four decades, more than 400 congregations across the community have participated in Room In The Inn, welcoming groups of individuals for overnight shelter and creating environments that have fostered more informed and compassionate citizenry;

and WHEREAS, the Room In The Inn model of care has been replicated in 39 other cities throughout the United States and Canada, extending its impact far beyond Nashville;

and WHEREAS, Room In The Inn has grown from its original winter shelter program into the city’s only single-site campus offering comprehensive services for people without housing, providing emergency support as well as long-term pathways to stability;

and WHEREAS, Room In The Inn serves approximately 4,000 individuals each year and supports as many as 400 unhoused neighbors per day through its broad range of programs and services;

and WHEREAS, Room In The Inn operates as a public-private partnership supported by the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, alongside federal funding, congregations, and private donors, reflecting the community’s shared commitment to addressing homelessness collaboratively;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jacob Kupin, District 19 Council Member of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, along with the undersigned Council Members, do hereby recognize the 40th anniversary of Room In The Inn, and honor its enduring service, leadership, and impact on the greater Nashville community.
